Lorong Panggung, a serene alley near Petaling Street in Kuala Lumpur, offers a hidden escape from the city's hustle and bustle. In 2016, my eldest sister captured her wedding photos in this charming alley, igniting my own fascination with it. By October 2017, I began crafting a model to celebrate its original allure, only to learn of its impending reconstruction in May 2018. This creation serves as a tribute to the authentic essence of Lorong Panggung and Ho Kow Kopitiam.
"Kopitiam" means coffee shop in Malaysia. Ho Kow kopitiam stood in the alley for over six decades, passed down through generations. It was a beloved spot where locals relished a classic Malaysian breakfast, complete with kaya toast, soft-boiled eggs, and kopi (coffee). While the kopitiam faced closure due to reconstruction, the spirit of inheritance endures, with the business thriving on Jalan Balai Polis, ensuring its legacy for generations to come.
Let's also appreciate the unique architectural elements of Lorong Panggung, such as the Tang Men, a dual/triple-door system showcasing Cantonese door characteristics. This historical structure, dating back to the early 20th century, is a rarity in Kuala Lumpur. Beyond crafting miniatures, this work embodies the architectural artistry of our ancestors and preserves cherished memories within the community.
