“ The Abang Roti ”
2024
scale. 1/12
size. L25cm x D25cm x H20cm
material. mixed media. clay, plastic, paper.
Description:
As a kid, I always looked forward to my “grocery time” every evening around 5:30PM. The abang roti, as we called him, with his motorbike loaded with snacks, would stop in front of our house, attracting all the kids in the neighborhood with his horn. With five children in our house, it’s no wonder he made our place a regular stop. My mum would sometimes buy bread/roti from him for our next day's breakfast.
I loved getting snacks that came with a little extra; a toy in the pack or even a sticker would make me so happy, like receiving a bonus! As an adult, whenever I return to my hometown, I still buy snacks from the abang for my niece and nephew. It's a way of showing my support and reminiscing the joy of my own childhood.
